Make your own Dropbox like Cloud Storage service

The free, open-source program OwnCloud lets you create a cloud storage system on your own server or website. Just like Dropbox and other similar services, it allows you to remotely access your files from anywhere, sync data and share content with others. In addition, there’s a music player, photo gallery, calendar, bookmarks service and contacts app.

If you are not sure whether it’s right for you, there’s a live demo account that you can play around with at demo.owncloud.org. Everything you need for installing the software can be found at owncloud.org/install, with software available for Windows, Android and iOS.

As an alternative, you might want to consider Tonido, which turns your PC into a web server and lets you securely access your files anywhere, share content with friends, and stream music over the internet. You can expand the software’s functionality by installing plug-ins, and there are also free apps available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.
