4 Free Software to Hide & Lock your Folder & Files with Password

One of the best and most versatile ways to keep your files private is to stash them in a hidden area on your hard drive. You can create a personal vault for storing anything you want to keep safe and secure, such as downloads of your passport, bank statements or a will.

There are numerous excellent free solutions available, and some developers also offer paid-for versions with extra features and enhanced security.

My Lockbox is a simple tool that hides any folder on your hard drive. If a folder can’t be seen, no one will know it’s there, so they won’t be tempted to try and open it. The presence of My Lockbox might tip them off, of course, but you can secure it with a password. The only downside is that My Lockbox asks you to enter a password hint, which can be displayed on the login screen, so either leave it blank or make sure it’s not something that can be worked out easily. See our Mini Workshop opposite to get started with the software.

SafeHouse Explorer is another excellent program. It lets you create SafeHouse Volumes, which are containers protected by passwords. You can set the size of the storage area and choose whether to keep it fixed or make it resizable. You can also use the application to create self-extracting folders that can be opened without needing to have the software to hand - useful for carrying on a USB stick, for example. You’ll just need to type in your password to open them.

TrueCrypt and Wise Folder Hider are also worth trying.
