How to Use Parenatal Controls in IE10

Windows 8 users have Internet Explorer 10 built in. However, it’s also available for Windows 7. Even though it’s still being tested, it is well worth installing because it is a significant improvement on IE9. Go to Internet Explorer Download page and click the download link in the IE10 section.

Use parental controls

It has always been possible to limit what children can access on the internet, but IE10 has changed a few things. Go to the gear icon, choose ‘Internet options’, then the Content tab. Where Parental Controls used to be, you will now find Family Safety.

Family Safety in IE10

Previously, clicking Parental Controls would simply report that you are an administrator and can not set the controls. You would have had to switch to the child’s account to set it up. Now, when Family Safety is clicked, Parental Controls opens in the Control Panel and you can set up any account.

Content Advisor, which you could use to limit what children could access on the internet, has been removed from IE10. It is no big loss because it was not particularly effective, and there are certainly better ways to limit internet access.

Free alternatives worth trying include K9 Web Protection, Parental Control Bar and OpenDNS. All limit access to adult websites and other unsuitable content.
